This course is designed for supervisors, team leaders, pastoral care staff, and others who support workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
PALM workers may experience a range of challenges while living and working away from home, including cultural adjustment, isolation, financial pressure, family separation, and workplace stress. This course provides practical skills to help you respond safely, respectfully, and effectively when a worker is in distress or experiencing a crisis.
You will learn how to:
- Listen with empathy and cultural awareness
- Use active listening and effective questioning techniques
- Respond calmly to distress and emotionally charged situations
- Apply simple grounding and de-escalation strategies
- Recognise signs of increased risk, including suicide
- Ask directly about suicide in a safe and appropriate way
- Support workers to access appropriate services and supports
This course does not train you to be a counsellor. Instead, it focuses on building your confidence to respond appropriately within your role, maintain professional boundaries, and ensure workers are supported to access the right help when needed.
The course is suitable for anyone in a support role. No previous training or experience is required.
